Debugging AWS is Broken (And You Know It)

It's 3 AM. Your API is throwing 500 errors. You know there's an error somewhere. You just need to find it.

How hard could that be?

The CloudWatch Nightmare

If you've ever debugged a production issue on AWS, you know the drill:

Step 1: Open CloudWatch. Stare at a wall of log groups.

  • /aws/lambda/api-gateway-handler
  • /aws/lambda/checkout-processor
  • /aws/apigateway/production
  • /ecs/my-service
  • ...20 more

Step 2: Pick a log group. Any log group. Hope you guessed right.

Step 3: Write a Log Insights query that looks like SQL had a bad day:

fields @timestamp, @message
| filter @message like /ERROR/
| sort @timestamp desc
| limit 100

Step 4: Realize the error is actually in a different log group. Start over.

Step 5: Try to correlate timestamps between API Gateway logs and Lambda logs. Was that 2024-02-12T03:45:23.389Z or 03:45:23.390Z? Was it in UTC or local time?

Step 6: Give up. Add Sentry.

The Third-Party Tax

Here's what usually happens:

"CloudWatch is too hard, let's just add [Sentry/Datadog/PostHog]."

Now you're:

  • Paying $99+/month for error tracking
  • Instrumenting every service with a different SDK
  • Still matching timestamps when you need the full context
  • Managing yet another vendor relationship

And the kicker? AWS already has all your logs. You're literally paying to make them usable.

The Filter Dance

Even if you stick with CloudWatch, you're stuck writing filters:

  • Kibana regex wizardry to find specific errors
  • CloudWatch Insights queries for every investigation
  • Manual timestamp correlation across services
  • Praying you didn't miss a log group

Notice what just happened:

  1. You saw the 500 error immediately (it's highlighted in red)
  2. You clicked it
  3. You saw the exact logs from that request — automatically correlated
  4. The error is right there: Database connection timeout

No log groups. No queries. No Sentry bill.

Why This Works
